Power Play is a mystery horror detective story with humans, vampires, werewolves, and other creatures.
Kaela Aiden and her friend Arek run a detective agency. When a woman comes to Aiden's office for help, the hairs on the back of her neck raise. The woman's family business is in trouble and she wants Aiden to mediate between her father and his rival, Dairev. It sounds like a simple task to get both parties to agree to some common ground, but there is a lot more going on than what appears.
The Triad, which is made up of one human, one vampire and one werewolf, wants Aiden and Arek dead because those two have interfered in their business one too many times. The Triad controls most of the illegal business in the city.
Local crime bosses are looking to kill Aiden because she's been a thorn in their side for too long. A mysterious man is trying to kill Aiden and Arek so that he can gain a seat on the Triad. Amidst all this, a few others are planning and plotting their own personal vendettas.
Aiden and Arek find themselves in the very center of all these power plays and must find a way to not only survive but save the woman and her family.

I would first like to start out by saying that while this isn't something I would normally read I thought I would give it a chance and was not disappointed at all. Murray managed to create a very believable new world where vampires, humans and werewolves rule together. Throw in some mysterious deaths, a conspiracy to take over the council, some seers, zombies, one kick butt strong female private investigator and her mysterious partner and you have one great story. Murray managed to give you just enough information about the people and world around them slowly without overloading you with information all at once yet still keep you guessing at what was happening and of course whodunit. I really hope that there is a sequel because I would love to know more about Arek and see if his and Kaela's friendship ever progresses.

A little slow to start, Power Play proved itself as a nicely detailed, enjoyable read. It includes a nice mix for fans of Werewolves, Vampires, Humans and Sha'naths and closely resembles a story of the battle of gangs and the Mafia. Everyone wants control and they will do anything to get it, even if it destroys your kind in the process.
Keala proves herself to be more than a woman and more than a simple detective. She is something more powerful than even her close partner, Arek, knows, maybe even more than she thinks she is but Kaela is the key to destroying the Triad. Through several attempts on her and her friends lives Keala becomes what she has always been destined for, restoring balance to their world.
Power Play is not normally what I would choose to pick up and read but I am really glad that I gave it a chance. I was very satisfied with the character development, the story line, great amount of details. Really a very good book.
